1 Après ces choses, dans la 4e année de cette semaine, à la tête du 3e mois, la parole de 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) vint à Abram dans un rêve disant : Ne crains pas Abram, je suis ton défenseur et ta récompense sera extrêmement grande.
2 Et il dit : 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), Seigneur, que me donneras-tu voyant que Je vais sans enfant, et le fils de Maseq, le fils de mon serviteur, est le dammasekite Eliezer ; il sera mon héritier et à moi tu n’as donné aucune semence.
3 Et Il lui dit : – Cet [homme] ne sera pas ton héritier mais ton héritier sera celui qui viendra de tes propres entrailles.
4 Et Il l’amena dehors en avant et lui dit : Regarde vers le ciel et compte les étoiles si tu es capable de les compter.
5 Et il regarda vers le ciel et considéra les étoiles. Et il lui dit : Ainsi sera ta semence.
6 Et il crut 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) et cela lui fut imputé en justice.
7 Et il lui dit : Je suis 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) qui t’a apporté d’Ur en Chaldée pour te donner le pays de Canaan pour le posséder à toujours, et je serai ton Elohim pour toi et ta semence après toi.
8 Et il dit : 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH), Seigneur, comment saurais-je que j’[en] hériterai ?
9 Et Il lui dit : Amène-moi une génisse de 3 ans et une chèvre de 3 ans et un mouton de 3 ans et une tourterelle et un pigeon.
10 Et il prit tout cela dans le milieu du mois et comme il habitait au chêne de Mamre qui est près d’Hebron, il construisit là un autel et sacrifia tout cela et il versa leur sang sur l’autel et les sépara par le milieu et les mit l’un par-dessus l’autre, mais il ne sépara pas les oiseaux.
11 Et les oiseaux s’abattirent sur les morceaux et Abram les en chassa et ne permit pas que les oiseaux y touchent.
12 Et cela arriva quand le soleil se couchait et qu’une extase tomba sur Abram et voici, une horreur de grande noirceur tomba sur lui, et il fut dit à Abram : Sache pour certain que ta semence sera comme un étranger dans la terre [qui n’est] pas la leur et ils les prendront en esclavage et les affligeront pendant 400 années.
13 Et Je jugerai aussi la nation pour qui ils seront en esclavage et après cela ils en sortiront avec beaucoup de biens et ils retourneront de ce côté-ci dans la 4e génération seulement, car l’iniquité des amorites n’est pas encore complète.
14 Et tu iras vers tes pères en paix et seras enterré à un bon âge avancé.
15 Et il se réveilla de son sommeil et se leva et le soleil s’était couché et il y avait une flamme et voici, une fournaise était fumante et une flamme de feu passait entre les morceaux.
16 Et en ce jour 𐤉𐤄𐤅𐤄 (YHWH) fit une alliance avec Abram en disant : À ta semence je donnerai cette terre, de la rivière d’Égypte jusqu’à la Grande mer, la rivière Euphrate, les kenites, les kenizzites, les kadmonites, les perizzites et les rephaim, les phakorites et les hivites et les amorites et les canaanites et les girgashites et les jébusites.
17 Et la journée passait et Abram offrit les morceaux et les oiseaux et leurs offrandes de fruit et leurs offrandes de boisson et le feu les dévora.
18 Et en ce jour nous fîmes une alliance avec Abram comme nous avons fait alliance avec Noah dans ce mois et Abram renouvela pour lui-même la fête et l’ordonnance pour toujours.
19 Et Abram se réjouit et fit connaître toutes ces choses à Saraї sa femme et il crut qu’il aurait une semence mais elle n’enfanta pas.
20 Et Saraї conseilla son mari Abram et lui dit : Va vers Hagar ma servante égyptienne, car il se pourrait que je fonde ta semence par elle.
21 Et Abram écouta la voix de Saraї sa femme et lui dit : Fais [ainsi]. Et Saraї prit Hagar sa servante l’égyptienne et la donna à Abram son mari pour être sa femme. Et il vint en elle et dans la 5e année de cette semaine elle conçut et lui porta un fils et il appela son nom Ishmaël, et c’était dans la 86e année de la vie d’Abram.

ואחר הדברים האלה בשנה הרביעית לשבוע ההוא בראש החודש השלישי היה דבר ה' אל אברם בחלום לאמור:
After these things, in the fourth year of this week, on the new moon of the third month, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a dream, saying:
אל תירא אברם אנכי מגן לך ושכרך יהיה הרבה מאוד:
"Fear not, Abram; I am thy defender, and thy reward will be exceeding great."
ויאמר אדני ה' מה תתן לי ואנכי הולך ערירי ובן משק שפחתי הוא דמשק אליעזר יורש אותי ולי לא נתתה זרע:
And he said: "Lord, Lord, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go hence childless, and the son of Mâsêq, the son of my handmaid, is the Dammasek Eliezer: he will be my heir, and to me thou hast given no seed."
ויאמר אליו לא יירשך זה כי אם אשר יצא ממעיך הוא יירשך:
And He said unto him: "This (man) will not be thy heir, but one that will come out of thine own bowels; he will be thine heir."
ויוצא אותו החוצה ויאמר אליו הבט נא השמימה וספור כוכבי השמים התוכל לספר אותם:
And He brought him forth abroad, and said unto him: "Look toward heaven and number the stars, if thou art able to number them."
ויבט השמימה וירא את הכוכבים ויאמר לו כה יהיה זרעך:
And he looked toward heaven, and beheld the stars. And He said unto him: "So shall thy seed be."
והאמין בה ותחשב לו לצדקה:
And he believed in the Lord, and it was counted to him for righteousness.
ויאמר אליו אני ה' אליך אשר הוצאתיך מאור כשדים לתת לך את ארץ הכנעני לאחוזת עולם:
And He said unto him: "I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee the land of the Canaanites to possess it for ever;
ולהיות לך לאלהים ואלהי זרעך אחריך:
and I shall be God unto thee and to thy seed after thee."
ויאמר אדני ה' ויאמר ה' במה אדע כי אירשנה:
And he said: "Lord, Lord, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit (it)?"
ויאמר אליו קח לי עגלה משולשת ועז משולשת וכבש משולש ותור משולש ויונה:
And he said unto him: "Take Me an heifer of three years, and a goat of three years, and a sheep of three years, and a turtle-dove, and a pigeon."...
ויקח לו את כל אלה בחצי החודש:
And he took all these in the middle of the month;
וישב באלוני ממרא אשר אצל חברון:
and he dwelt at the oak of Mamre, which is near Hebron.
ויבן שם מזבח וישחט את כל אלה וישפוך את דמם על המזבח ויבתר אותם בתווך ויתן איש בתרו לקראת רעהו ואת הצפרים לא בתר:
And he built there an altar, and sacrificed all these; and he poured their blood upon the altar, and divided them in the midst, and laid them over against each other; but the birds divided he not.
ותרדנה הצפרים על הבתרים וישב אותם אברם ולא נתן את הצפרים לנגוע בהם:
And birds came down upon the pieces, and Abram drove them away, and did not suffer the birds to touch them.
ויהי כבוא השמש ותפול תרדמה על אברם והנה אימה חשכה גדולה נופלת עליו:
And it came to pass, when the sun had set, that an ecstasy fell upon Abram, and lo! an horror of great darkness fell upon him,
ויאמר אברם ידוע תדע כי גר יהיה זרעך בארץ לא להם ועבדום ועינו אתם ארבע מאות שנה:
and it was said unto Abram: "Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land (that is) not theirs, and they will bring them into bondage, and afflict them four hundred years.
ואת הגוי אשר יעבודו דן אנכי ואחרי כן יצאו משם ברכוש גדול:
And the nation also to whom they will be in bondage shall I judge, and after that they will come forth thence with much substance.
ואתה תבוא בשלום אל אבותיך ותקבר בשיבה טובה:
And thou wilt go to thy fathers in peace, and be buried in a good old age.
ובדור הרביעי ישוב הנה כי לא שלם עוון האמורי עד הנה:
But in the fourth generation they will return hither; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full."
וייקץ משנתו ויקם והשמש באה:
And he awoke from his sleep, and he arose, and the sun had set;
ותהי להבה והנה תנור עשן ולפיד אש עבר בין הגזרים:
and there was a flame, and behold! a furnace was smoking, and a flame of fire passed between the pieces.
ובלילה ההוא כרת ה' את אברם ברית לאמור לזרעך אתן את הארץ הזאת מנהר מצרים עד הנהר הגדול נהר פרת:
And on that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: "To thy seed will I give this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates,
את הקני הקנזי הפרזי והרפאים והפקורים החוי האמורי הכנעני הגרגשי ויעל מעליו:
the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Perizzites, and the Rephaim, the Phakorites, and the Hivites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."
ויעל אברם את הגזרים ואת הצפרים על מנחותיהם ונסכיהם ותאכל אותם האש:
And the day passed, and Abram offered the pieces, and the birds, and their fruit-offerings, and their drink-offerings, and the fire devoured them.
ובלילה ההוא כרת ברית את אברם על פי הברית אשר כרתנו את נוח בחודש הזה:
And on that day we made a covenant with Abram, according as we had covenanted with Noah in this month;
ויחדש אותו אברם למועד ולחוק לו עד עולם:
and Abram renewed the festival and ordinance for himself for ever.
וישמח אברם ויגד את כל הדברים האלה לשרי אשתו והאמין כי יהיה לו זרע והיא לא ילדה:
And Abram rejoiced, and made all these things known to Sarai his wife; and he believed that he would have seed, but she did not bear.
ותיעץ שרי את אישה ותאמר אליו בא נא אל שפחתי המצרית אל הגר אולי אבנה לך ממנה זרע:
And Sarai advised her husband Abram, and said unto him: "Go in unto Hagar, my Egyptian maid: it may be that I shall build up seed unto thee by her."
וישמע אברם לקול שרי אשתו ויאמר אליה כן תעשי:
And Abram hearkened unto the voice of Sarai his wife, and said unto her, "Do (so)."
ותקח שרי את הגר השפחה המצרית ותתן אותה לאברם אישה לו לאשה:
And Sarai took Hagar, her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to Abram, her husband, to be his wife.
ויבוא אליה ותהר ותלד בן ויקרא שמו ישמעאל בשנה החמישית לשבוע הזה:
And he went in unto her, and she conceived and bare him a son, and he called his name Ishmael, in the fifth year of this week;
ואברם היה בשנה ההיא בן שמונים שנה ושש שנים:
and this was the eighty-sixth year in the life of Abram.
