Yobelim/Jubilés Chapitre 37
1 Et le jour que Isaac, le père de Jacob et d’Esau, mourut, les fils d’Esau entendirent Isaac donner la portion du plus âgé au plus jeune fils Jacob et étaient très en colère et ils argumentèrent avec leur père en disant : Pourquoi ton père a-t-il donné à Jacob la portion du plus âgé et est passé par-dessus toi alors que tu es le plus âgé et Jacob le plus jeune ?
2 Et il leur dit : Parce que j’ai vendu mon droit d’aînesse à Jacob contre un petit bouillon de lentilles le jour que mon père m’envoya chasser et attraper et lui apporter quelque chose afin qu’il mange et me bénisse ; il est venu par ruse et apporta à mon père à manger et à boire et mon père le bénit et me mit sous sa main.
3 Et maintenant mon père m’a fait jurer, moi et lui, que nous ne comploterons pas en mal l’un contre son frère et que nous continuerons dans l’amour et la paix chacun avec son frère et nous ne corromprons pas nos voies.
4 Et ils lui dirent : Nous ne t’écouterons pas pour faire la paix avec lui, car notre force est plus grande que sa force et nous sommes plus puissants que lui.
5 Nous irons contre lui et le tuerons et le détruirons lui et ses fils.
6 Et si tu ne viens pas avec nous, nous te ferons du mal aussi.
7 Et maintenant écoute nous : Faisons envoyer Aram et Philistia et Moab et Ammon, et choisissons pour nous des hommes de choix qui sont ardents au combat et allons contre lui et lui faire la guerre et exterminons-le de la terre avant qu’il devienne fort.
8 Et leur père leur dit : N’allez pas et ne faites pas la guerre contre lui sinon vous tomberez devant lui.
9 Et ils lui dirent : Cela aussi est exactement ton modèle d’action de ta bouche jusqu’à ce jour et tu mettrais ton cou sous son joug - nous n’écouterons pas tes paroles.
10 Et ils allèrent à Aram et à Aduram chez l’ami de leur père et ils engagèrent avec eux 1 000 hommes de combat, homme de guerre choisis.
11 Et de Moab, des enfants d’Ammon vinrent avec ceux qui étaient engagés, 1 000 hommes choisis, et 1 000 hommes de guerre choisis de Philistia, et 1 000 hommes de combat choisis d’Edom et des horites, et des hommes forts de guerre de Kittim.
12 Et ils dirent à leur père : Viens avec eux et conduis-les, sinon nous te tuerons.
13 Et il était rempli de colère et d’indignation en voyant que ses fils le forçaient d’aller devant [eux] pour les conduire contre Jacob son frère mais ensuite il se rappela tout le mal qui était caché dans son cœur contre Jacob son frère et il ne se souvint pas du serment qu’il avait juré à son père et à sa mère qu’il ne comploterait aucun mal tous les jours contre Jacob son frère.
14 Et malgré tout cela, Jacob ne savait pas qu’ils partaient contre lui en guerre et il pleurait Léah sa femme jusqu’à ce qu’ils approchent très près de la tour avec 4 000 guerriers et hommes de guerre choisis.
15 Et les hommes d’Hebron envoyés vers lui dirent : Voici ton frère est venu contre toi pour te frapper avec 4 000 selles avec l’épée et ils portaient des boucliers et des armes.
16 Car ils aimaient Jacob plus que Esau, aussi ils lui dirent, car Jacob était un homme plus libéral et plus compatissant qu’Esau.
17 Mais Jacob ne voulait pas croire jusqu’à ce qu’ils viennent très près de la tour.
18 Et il ferma les portes de la tour et se tint sur les remparts et parla à son frère Esau et lui dit : Noble est la consolation pour laquelle tu es venu me réconforter parce que ma femme est morte.
19 Est-ce le serment que tu as juré à ton père et encore à ta mère avant qu’ils meurent ?
20 Tu as brisé le serment et tu es condamné au moment que tu as juré à ton père.
21 Et alors Esau lui répondit et dit : Ni enfants des hommes, ni bêtes de la terre n’ont aucun serment de justice par lequel faire [un serment valide] qu’ils auraient juré à toujours, mais chaque jour ils complotent le mal l’un contre l’autre et comment tuer son adversaire et rival.
22 Et il n’y a pas d’observation du lien de frère avec toi.
23 Entends ces mots que je te déclare ! Si le sanglier peut changer sa peau et rendre ses poils aussi doux que la laine, ou s’il peut lui pousser des cornes sur sa tête comme les cornes d’un cerf ou d’un mouton, ou si les seins se sépareraient d’eux-mêmes de leur mère - alors j’observerais le lien de frère avec toi, car tu n’as pas été un frère pour moi.
24 Et si les loups font la paix avec les agneaux et ainsi ne pas les dévorer ou leur faire violence, et si leurs cœurs sont vers eux pour de bon, alors il y aurait la paix dans mon cœur envers toi.
25 Et si le lion devient l’ami du bœuf et fait la paix avec lui et s’il est lié au joug avec lui et creuse avec lui, alors ferai-je la paix avec toi.
26 Et quand le corbeau deviendra blanc comme le raza, alors sache que je t’ai aimé et ferai la paix avec toi.
27 Tu seras déraciné et tes fils seront déracinés et il n’y aura pas de paix pour toi.
28 Et quand Jacob vit qu’il était [ainsi] disposé au mal envers lui avec son cœur et avec toute son âme pour le tuer et qu’il était sorti comme le sanglier sauvage qui fonce sur la lance qui le perce et tue et ne s’en détourne pas, alors il parla aux siens et à ses serviteurs qu’ils devaient l’attaquer lui et tous ses compagnons.
ויהי אחרי מות יצחק אבי יעקב ועשו וישמעו בני עשו כי ביכר יצחק את יעקב בנו הקטן ויחר להם מאוד:
And on the day that Isaac the father of Jacob and Esau died, the sons of Esau heard that Isaac had given the portion of the elder to his younger son Jacob and they were very angry.
ויריבו עם אביהם לאמור מדוע ביכר אביך את יעקב הצעיר על פניך ואתה הבכור:
And they strove with their father, saying: "Why hath thy father given Jacob the portion of the elder and passed over thee, although thou art the elder and Jacob the younger?"
ויאמר אליהם עקב אשר מכרתי את בכורתי ליעקב במעט נזיד עדשים:
And he said unto them "Because I sold my birthright to Jacob for a small mess of lentils;
ביום אשר שלח אבי אותי לצוד ולתפוש ציד ולהביא לו כי יאכל ויברך אותי בא במרמה ויבא לאבי לאכול ולשתות ויברך אותו אבי ואותי נתן תחת ידו:
and on the day my father sent me to hunt and catch and bring him something that he should eat and bless me, he came with guile and brought my father food and drink, and my father blessed him and put me under his hand.
ועתה השביענו אבינו אותי ואותו כי לא נעשה רעה איש לאחיו ולא נשחית את דרכינו:
And now our father hath caused us to swear, me and him, that we shall not mutually devise evil, either against his brother, and that we shall continue in love and in peace each with his brother and not make our ways corrupt."
ויאמרו אליו לא נשמע בקולך להיות אתו בשלום כי חזקים אנחנו ממנו ועליו נתגבר:
And they said unto him, "We shall not hearken unto thee to make peace with him; for our strength is greater than his strength, and we are more powerful than he;
הבה נצא לקראתו ונהרגהו ונכחידה את בניו ואם אינך יוצא אתנו נעשה גם לך רעה:
we shall go against him and slay him, and destroy him and his sons. And if thou wilt not go with us, we shall do hurt to thee also.
ועתה לו שמענו נבחר לנו בארם ובפלשת ובמואב ובעמון אנשי חיל חלוצי צבא ונצא לקראתו ונלחמה בו ונכרתנו מן הארץ בטרם יעשה חיל:
And now hearken unto us: Let us send to Aram and Philistia and Moab and Ammon, and let us choose for ourselves chosen men who are ardent for battle, and let us go against him and do battle with him, and let us exterminate him from the earth before he groweth strong."
ויאמר אליהם אביהם לא תצאו ולא תלחמו בו פן תפלו לפניו:
And their father said unto them, "Do not go and do not make war with him lest ye fall before him."
ויאמרו אליו הזה משפטך מנעוריך עד היום הזה כי תטה צוארך תחת עולו לא נשמע לדבר הזה:
And they said unto him, "This too, is exactly thy mode of action from thy youth until this day, and thou art putting thy neck under his yoke. We shall not hearken to these words."
וישלחו אל ארם ואל עדורם רֵע אביהם וישכרו מהם אלף אנשי מלחמה ובחירי חיל:
And they sent to Aram, and to ’Adurâm to the friend of their father, and they hired along with them one thousand fighting men, chosen men of war.
ויבואו אליהם ממואב ומבני עמון השכירים אלף בחירים ומפלשתים אלף בחירי חיל ומאדום והחורים אלף בחירי מלחמה ובמן החתים גיבורי מלחמה:
And there came to them from Moab and from the children of Ammon, those who were hired, one thousand chosen men, and from Philistia, one thousand chosen men of war, and from Edom and from the Horites one thousand chosen fighting men, and from the Kittim mighty men of war.
ויאמרו אל אביהם צא אתה לפניהם פן נמיתך וימלא אף וחמה בראותו כי בניו מאלצים אותו לצאת לפניהם להלחם ביעקב אחיו:
And they said unto their father: "Go forth with them and lead them, else we shall slay thee."
And he was filled with wrath and indignation on seeing that his sons were forcing him to go before (them) to lead them against Jacob his brother.
וישוב ויזכור את כל הרעה הטמונה בליבו על יעקב אחיו ולא זכר את השבועה אשר נשבע לאביו ולאמו אם יעשה כל רע ליעקב אחיו כל ימי חייו:
But afterward he remembered all the evil which lay hidden in his heart against Jacob his brother; and he remembered not the oath which he had sworn to his father and to his mother that he would devise no evil all his days against Jacob his brother.
ויעקב לא ידע מאומה מכל הדברים האלה כי יצאו בחרב לקראתו והוא מתאבל על לאה אשתו עד אשר הקריבו לבוא אל המגדל לקראתו ארבעה אלפים אנשים חלוצי צבא גיבורי מלחמה בחירי חיל:
And notwithstanding all this, Jacob knew not that they were coming against him to battle, and he was mourning for Leah, his wife, until they approached very near to the tower with four thousand warriors and chosen men of war.
ואנשי חברון שלחו אליו לאמור הנה אחיך יצא לקראתך להלחם בך ועמו ארבעה אלפים איש חגורי חרב ותופשי מגן ונושאי כלי מלחמה:
And the men of Hebron sent to him saying, "Behold thy brother hath come against thee, to fight thee, with four thousand girt with the sword, and they carry shields and weapons";
באהבתם את יעקב מעשו הגידו לו את הדבר הזה כי היה יעקב איש רחמים ורב חסד מעשו:
for they loved Jacob more than Esau. So they told him; for Jacob was a more liberal and merciful man than Esau.
ולא האמין יעקב לדבר הזה עד אשר הקריבו אל יד המגדל:
But Jacob would not believe until they came very near to the tower.
ויתיצב על המגדל וידבר את עשו אחיו ויאמר הלנחם אותי באת הלום הבאת אלי על דבר אשתי אשר מתה עלי?
And he closed the gates of the tower; and he stood on the battlements and spake to his brother Esau and said, "Noble is the comfort wherewith thou hast come to comfort me for my wife who hath died.
הזאת השבועה אשר נשבעת פעמיים לאבותיך לפני מותם? הפרת את השבועה ובהשבעך לאביך חרצת משפטך:
Is this the oath that thou didst swear to thy father and again to thy mother before they died? Thou hast broken the oath, and on the moment that thou didst swear to thy father wast thou condemned."
ויען עשו ויאמר אליו מעולם לא ישבע בבני אדם ובחיות הארץ שבועת אמונת אומן לעד כי אם בעצם היום ההוא יעשו רעה איש לאחיו ומבקש שונא את נפש שונאו:
And then Esau answered and said unto him, "Neither the children of men nor the beasts of the earth have any oath of righteousness which in swearing they have sworn (an oath valid) for ever; but every day they devise evil one against another, and how each may slay his adversary and foe.
וגם אתה אך שנוא תשנא אותי ואת בני עד עולם ואין להקים אהבת אחים אתך:
And thou dost hate me and my children for ever. And there is no observing the tie of brotherhood with thee.
שמע נא את דברי אלה אשר אנכי דובר באזניך אם אהפוך עור החזיר ומסמרות שערו לצמר ואם יצמחו קרנים על ראשו כקרני השעירים אז אכרת לך ברית אהבת אחים:
Hear these words which I declare unto thee, If the boar can change its skin and make its bristles as soft as wool, Or if it can cause horns to sprout forth on its head like the horns of a stag or of a sheep, Then shall I observe the tie of brotherhood with thee.
ואם יפרד השד מן האם כי לא היית אח לי ואם ישלימו הזאבים עם הכבשים לבל יאכלו ויטרפו אותם ואם יתנו את לבבם להיטיב איש לאחיהו אז יבוא בלבי שלום לך:
[And if the breasts separated themselves from their mother; for thou hast not been a brother to me.]
And if the wolves make peace with the lambs so as not to devour or do them violence, And if their hearts are towards them for good, Then there will be peace in my heart towards thee.
ואם יהי האריה רע לפר ועול אחד יעלה על צואר שניהם ויחדו יחרשו אז אעשה לך שלום:
And if the lion becometh the friend of the ox and maketh peace with him, And if he is bound under one yoke with him and plougheth with him, Then shall I make peace with thee.
ואם ילבינו העורבים כאווז או אז אדע כי אוהב אותך וברית שלומי עמך:
And when the raven becometh white as the râzâ,Then know that -I have loved thee And shall make peace with thee.
הכרת תכרת ובניך יכרתו ואין שלום לך:
Thou shalt be rooted out, And thy sons shall be rooted out, And there shall be no peace for thee."
וירא יעקב בעת ההיא כי הרע את מחשבתו אליו ובכל נפשו יבקש להמיתו וכי בא כחזיר מיער הבא אל הרומח הדוקר אותו ולא יסוג אחור ממנה:
And when Jacob saw that he was (so) evilly disposed towards him with his heart, and with all his soul as to slay him, and that he had come springing like the wild boar which cometh upon the spear that pierceth and killeth it, and recoileth not from it;
ויאמר אל אנשיו ואל עבדיו להתגרות בו ובכל מרעיו מלחמה:
Then he spake to his own and to his servants that they should attack him and all his companions.
